Which player won the 1990 Embassy World Professional Darts Championship?

The story behind the answer

Phil Taylor won the 1990 Embassy World Professional Darts Championship.

The tournament was the BDO World Darts Championship, staged at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey. Taylor defeated Eric Bristow 6–1 in the final, securing the first of his record haul of sixteen world championship titles across the BDO and PDC versions of the sport.

Taylor had been Bristow’s protégé, so the final carried an important personal and sporting storyline. Bristow was a five-time world champion and one of the best-known players of the 1980s, while Taylor was still establishing himself at the top level. The 1990 victory began Taylor’s long reign as the dominant professional player. The event is sometimes confused with the later PDC World Championship, which began in 1994 after a group of leading players broke away from the BDO.
