Which player scored twice in 79 seconds during Brighton’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa in 2026–27 Matchweek 1?

The story behind the answer

Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in 79 seconds during Brighton’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa in 2026–27 Matchweek 1.

Brighton raced into a four-goal lead during the first 31 minutes of the match at the Amex Stadium on 23 August 2026. Hinshelwood scored two of those goals in a remarkably short spell of 79 seconds.

Maxim De Cuyper also scored for Brighton, while Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf put through his own net. Villa’s afternoon became even more difficult when João Gomes was sent off five minutes before half-time.

Brighton’s four first-half goals placed the club among a small group of teams to achieve that feat in a Premier League Matchweek 1. The earlier examples were Bolton Wanderers in 2001, Manchester United in 2007 and Liverpool in 2020. Brighton won 4–0, but Chelsea’s 6–0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in 2010 remained the biggest opening-weekend win.
