Dominik Szoboszlai scored the last-gasp penalty that gave Liverpool a 2–2 draw at Newcastle United in August 2026.
Szoboszlai converted from the spot in the ninth minute of stoppage time at St James’ Park. His goal rescued Liverpool after Newcastle had twice taken the lead in a dramatic opening-weekend match.
Anthony Elanga scored Newcastle’s first goal, Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool and Joe Willock restored the home side’s advantage. Liverpool’s Victor Muñoz won the late penalty after being fouled by Lewis Hall.
The match was also marked by tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for both clubs and managed Newcastle. The draw extended Liverpool’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 20 meetings, although Newcastle came close to ending that sequence.
