Which player scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty in the 2026–27 Premier League opener at Newcastle?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty in the 2026–27 Premier League opener at Newcastle.

Szoboszlai converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time to earn Liverpool a 2–2 draw at St James’ Park. His penalty rescued a point in a match Newcastle had threatened to win after taking the lead early.

Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga scored after only five minutes, but Liverpool stayed in the contest and eventually secured the late equaliser. The match was played amid tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had represented and managed Newcastle and had also played for Liverpool.

Szoboszlai’s penalty should not be confused with Elanga’s opening goal or with the midfielders Bruno Guimarães and Yoane Wissa, who were involved in Newcastle’s line-up but did not take Liverpool’s decisive spot kick.
