Which player scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in a match Newcastle had twice led.

The penalty was awarded after Newcastle defender Lewis Hall fouled Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz inside the penalty area. Szoboszlai took responsibility and placed the ball into the top-left corner.

The moment was particularly difficult for Liverpool because Alexander Isak, who had moved from Newcastle to Liverpool the previous summer, was being loudly booed by the home supporters. Szoboszlai’s goal ensured the opening-round fixture ended level.
