Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s ninth-minute stoppage-time penalty in the 2–2 draw with Newcastle United during the 2026–27 opener.
The penalty came at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026, rescuing a point for Liverpool in a highly dramatic match. Szoboszlai converted in the ninth minute of added time, sending the ball into the top-left corner.
The moment followed a foul on Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz by Newcastle defender Lewis Hall. Newcastle supporters had wondered whether former Newcastle striker Alexander Isak would take the kick after moving to Liverpool, but Szoboszlai took responsibility instead.
The fixture was played amid tributes to former Newcastle manager and player Kevin Keegan. The late equaliser meant that Liverpool and Newcastle shared four goals and a point apiece. Because the goal was scored so late, it is often described as the 99th-minute penalty, although the official match report identifies it as the ninth minute of stoppage time.
