Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s ninth-minute stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 opening round.
Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in one of the round’s most dramatic finishes.
Newcastle had taken an early lead through Anthony Elanga, who scored after only five minutes. Liverpool later fought back, but Newcastle remained close to victory until the late penalty. The draw was played amid tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had represented both clubs and managed Newcastle.
Szoboszlai’s goal should not be confused with the match’s opening goal, which belonged to Elanga. Nor was it a free-kick: the Liverpool midfielder’s decisive contribution came from the penalty spot at the very end of the match.
