Which player scored Liverpool’s 99th-minute penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s 99th-minute penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. The decisive late moment came when Newcastle substitute Victor Muñoz was fouled in the penalty area by Lewis Hall.

Szoboszlai took responsibility instead of Alexander Isak, who had recently left Newcastle for Liverpool and was being heavily booed by the home crowd. The Hungarian midfielder struck the penalty into the top-left corner to secure a point.

The goal was especially memorable because of its timing and the atmosphere inside the stadium. Szoboszlai later explained that the noise was so intense he could not hear his own voice or the referee’s whistle clearly before the kick.
