Maradona scored the controversial goal for Argentina against England in the quarter-final of the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Six minutes into the second half, he challenged England goalkeeper Peter Shilton for a dropping ball and appeared to direct it into the net with his left hand. The Tunisian referee, Ali Bin Nasser, did not see the handball and awarded the goal.

The unusual name came from Maradona’s post-match explanation that the goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” Replays later made the handball unmistakable, and Maradona eventually acknowledged in 2005 that he had deliberately used his hand.
