Which player has won the most World Matchplay darts titles?
Answer
Phil Taylor
Answer
Phil Taylor
Phil Taylor has won the most World Matchplay darts titles, with 16 championships.
The World Matchplay is one of the Professional Darts Corporation’s premier events. It was first held in 1994 at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, England, and Taylor won the inaugural edition by defeating fellow Englishman Rod Harrington in the final.
Taylor’s dominance extended across much of the tournament’s history. He won the event 16 times between 1995 and 2014, including an extraordinary run of eight consecutive titles from 2000 through 2007. His final World Matchplay victory came in 2014, when he beat Michael van Gerwen.
The record is separate from Taylor’s achievements at the PDC World Championship. Although both tournaments are major PDC events, the World Matchplay is played in a legs-and-sets format at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens and has its own historical record.
