Cars 2 is the Pixar film in which Lightning McQueen competes in the World Grand Prix.
Released in 2011, Cars 2 expands the series beyond Radiator Springs and follows McQueen through an international racing event organized by entrepreneur Sir Miles Axlerod. The race is held in three locations: Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London.
The story also gives Mater a major role. After being mistaken for an American spy, he becomes involved in an international espionage plot involving criminals, alternative fuel, and a device that can control race cars. This makes Cars 2 different in tone from the more road-trip-focused original.
Cars 3 returned to a more conventional racing story, centering on McQueen’s competition with the younger racer Jackson Storm. The World Grand Prix is therefore specifically associated with Cars 2, not the first or third Cars feature.
