Which peninsula is the site of Sevastopol and projects into the northern Black Sea?
Answer
Crimean Peninsula
Answer
Crimean Peninsula
The Crimean Peninsula is the Black Sea peninsula on which Sevastopol is located.
Crimea projects southward into the northern Black Sea and is connected to mainland Ukraine by the narrow Isthmus of Perekop. The Sea of Azov lies to its northeast, while the Kerch Strait separates Crimea from Russia’s Taman Peninsula.
Sevastopol is a major port on Crimea’s southwestern coast and has long been associated with naval history. The peninsula also contains Yalta, the Crimean Mountains, and extensive resort coastlines along the Black Sea.
Crimea has a complex political history. It was transferred from the Russian SFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954, became part of independent Ukraine in 1991, and was occupied and annexed by Russia in 2014; Ukraine and most countries do not recognize that annexation. The name refers to the geographic peninsula regardless of political claims.
