Which peninsula in Panama is the country’s largest and contains the Azuero region?
Answer
Azuero Peninsula
Answer
Azuero Peninsula
Panama’s Azuero Peninsula is the country’s largest peninsula and contains the Azuero region.
It projects southward into the Pacific Ocean from central Panama. The peninsula includes the provinces of Herrera, Los Santos, and parts of Veraguas. Its landscapes combine dry forest, farmland, rolling hills, beaches, and coastal wetlands.
Azuero has long been a major center of Panamanian folk culture. Towns such as Las Tablas are associated with festivals, traditional music, crafts, and distinctive regional celebrations. Agriculture and cattle ranching are also important across much of the interior.
The peninsula is separated from the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal by the Gulf of Panama. It should not be confused with the Darién region, which occupies eastern Panama near the border with Colombia. The name Azuero honors Tomás Herrera, a nineteenth-century Panamanian political and military figure.
