Which peninsula in eastern Canada contains the city of Halifax and forms Nova Scotia’s mainland?

The story behind the answer

The Nova Scotia Peninsula is the eastern Canadian peninsula containing Halifax and forming the mainland portion of Nova Scotia.

It is connected to New Brunswick by the narrow Isthmus of Chignecto. The peninsula is bordered by the Bay of Fundy and Northumberland Strait to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Gulf of Maine to the southwest.

Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital and largest municipality, sits on the peninsula’s Atlantic side along one of the world’s large natural harbors. The mainland peninsula is separate from Cape Breton Island, which lies northeast across the Strait of Canso.

Nova Scotia is therefore both a province and, in common usage, a broader geographic name associated with the peninsula and Cape Breton Island. The peninsula should not be confused with the Gaspé Peninsula in neighboring Quebec or Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.
