Which peninsula extends from northwestern Mexico along the Pacific Ocean?

The story behind the answer

The Baja California Peninsula extends from northwestern Mexico along the Pacific Ocean.

It separates the Pacific Ocean on the west from the Gulf of California on the east and stretches roughly 1,200 kilometres south from the United States–Mexico border. The peninsula consists primarily of the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Its narrow, mountainous form includes the Peninsular Ranges and broad desert regions.

The peninsula's Pacific coast is famous for gray whale migration, while the Gulf of California supports exceptionally rich marine life. The southern tip includes Cabo San Lucas, a major tourism centre. A common mix-up is confusing the peninsula with Baja California state: the state occupies only the northern portion, whereas the geographic peninsula includes both states. The Gulf of California is also called the Sea of Cortez.
