Which peninsula contains Spain and Portugal in southwestern Europe?

The story behind the answer

The Iberian Peninsula contains Spain and Portugal in southwestern Europe.

It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay, and the Mediterranean Sea, while the Pyrenees form its northeastern land boundary with France. Spain occupies most of the peninsula, and Portugal covers much of its western side. Andorra and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar are also located on the peninsula.

The name comes from the ancient Iberians, a group known from Greek and Roman writings. The peninsula is sometimes called Iberia, but that name can also refer to the ancient region or, in other contexts, Georgia in the Caucasus. Madrid, Lisbon, and Barcelona are among its best-known cities. The peninsula's geography includes the high central Meseta, major river valleys, and mountain ranges such as the Sierra Nevada.
