Which Paralympic sport was first contested at the 1968 Tel Aviv Games?

The story behind the answer

Lawn bowls was first contested as a Paralympic sport at the 1968 Tel Aviv Games.

Lawn bowls joined the Paralympic programme in Tel Aviv in 1968. The sport involves rolling weighted bowls toward a smaller target ball called the jack. Because the bowls are biased, they follow a curved path rather than traveling in a straight line.

The Tel Aviv Games were held in Israel from 4 to 13 November 1968. Lawn bowls was one of the sports introduced at that edition, alongside events such as wheelchair basketball, swimming and table tennis. It was later removed from the Summer Paralympic programme after the 1988 Games.

Lawn bowls can be confused with boccia because both involve sending balls close to a target. Boccia uses smooth colored balls and is designed around precision throwing or rolling, while lawn bowls uses larger biased bowls on a bowling green.
