Boccia uses a ramp and an assistant for some athletes who cannot throw the ball independently.
In boccia, players propel leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball called the jack. Athletes with the most significant physical impairments may use a ramp to roll the ball and may direct an assistant through approved signals. The assistant cannot choose the shot or turn toward the court during play.
Boccia began as a sport for athletes with cerebral palsy and later expanded to other eligible impairment groups. Its classification system includes BC3, the category most associated with ramps and assistants. The sport is played individually, in pairs and in teams.
Boccia is often confused with bowls because both involve positioning balls near a target. Boccia is its own Paralympic sport, with distinctive soft leather balls, a jack and classification-specific equipment.
