Which Paralympic sport is contested exclusively as a bench-press event?

The story behind the answer

Para powerlifting is the Paralympic sport contested exclusively as a bench-press event.

In Paralympic para powerlifting, athletes compete in the bench press. They lower a weighted bar to the chest, pause on the referee’s command and then press it upward until the elbows are locked. The heaviest successful lift determines the result.

The sport is open to athletes with eligible physical impairments, and men and women compete in bodyweight categories. Unlike Olympic weightlifting, para powerlifting does not include the snatch or the clean and jerk. That difference is a frequent source of confusion for new viewers.

Para powerlifting evolved from weightlifting for athletes with disabilities and became part of the Paralympic programme at the 1964 Tokyo Games. The event rewards maximum strength, control and technical precision.
