Which Paralympic sport awards medals in individual and team events using a foil, épée or sabre?

The story behind the answer

Wheelchair fencing awards medals in individual and team events using foil, épée and sabre.

The sport is adapted for athletes who compete while seated in wheelchairs fixed to a metal frame. Because competitors cannot move toward or away from one another, the distance between the wheelchairs is measured and fixed before the bout. Athletes use their free hand to hold the wheelchair or frame for stability.

The three weapons have different target areas and rules. Foil targets the trunk, épée targets the entire body above the hips, and sabre targets the area above the waist. Electronic scoring equipment registers valid hits.

Wheelchair fencing has been part of the Paralympic programme since the 1960 Games in Rome. It is sometimes mistakenly described as only a foil event, but all three fencing weapons are used in Paralympic competition.
