Which Palauan state contains the capital Ngerulmud?
Answer
Melekeok
Answer
Melekeok
The Palauan state containing the capital Ngerulmud is Melekeok.
Ngerulmud is Palau’s seat of government and lies within Melekeok State, on the central-eastern side of Babeldaob, Palau’s largest island. The capitol complex contains buildings for the executive, legislative and judicial branches, arranged around a central open plaza inspired in part by traditional Palauan meeting-house forms.
Palau’s former capital was Koror, but the government moved to Ngerulmud in October 2006. The move fulfilled a constitutional direction to establish a permanent capital on Babeldaob rather than keeping the national government on Koror Island. Ngerulmud is near, but distinct from, Melekeok village, the state’s traditional and administrative centre.
A common mix-up is to answer Babeldaob. That is the island, not the state. Another is Koror, which remains Palau’s largest city and major population centre but is no longer the national capital.
