Which original Xbox game introduced players to the character Master Chief?

The story behind the answer

Halo: Combat Evolved introduced players to Master Chief on the original Xbox.

Released in 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved starred the armored supersoldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. Bungie developed the game, and Microsoft published it as a flagship title for the company’s first console. Its campaign, vehicle combat, weapon design, and competitive multiplayer helped establish Halo as an important Xbox franchise.

The subtitle “Combat Evolved” distinguished the first game from later numbered entries, including Halo 2 and Halo 3. The story follows Master Chief and the artificial intelligence Cortana as they investigate the mysterious ringworld known as Installation 04.

Although Halo became strongly associated with Xbox, the original game was first created for the Macintosh before Microsoft acquired Bungie and reshaped it as a console shooter. The game’s success made Master Chief one of the best-known characters in Xbox history.
