Which organization governs the UCI BMX World Championships?

The story behind the answer

The UCI BMX World Championships are governed by the Union Cycliste Internationale, or UCI. The championships are held under UCI regulations, making the UCI the sport’s international governing body rather than the International Olympic Committee, World Athletics, or FIFA.

The UCI was founded in Paris in 1900 and is headquartered in Aigle, Switzerland. It oversees competitive cycling worldwide, including road racing, track cycling, mountain biking, cyclo-cross, gravel and BMX. Its responsibilities include competition rules, rider licensing, race classifications, rankings and disciplinary procedures.

BMX racing became part of the UCI World Championships programme in 1996, after earlier championships were organised under predecessor cycling bodies. The event awards world titles in several categories, and champions traditionally receive the cycling rainbow jersey. Brisbane previously hosted a BMX world championship in 1989, a reminder of the city’s long connection with the discipline.
