Michael Kamen arranged the orchestral parts for Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” on The Black Album.
Kamen was a composer, arranger, and conductor known for combining rock music with orchestral writing. His contribution helped expand the song beyond its acoustic-guitar foundation, adding strings that deepen its reflective and dramatic character.
“Nothing Else Matters” was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and became one of Metallica’s best-known power ballads. Hetfield initially treated the song as a private composition, but the band ultimately recorded it for the album. Its gentler opening and orchestral coloring represented a notable contrast with Metallica’s earlier aggressive material.
Kamen later worked with Metallica on the S&M project, where the band performed with the San Francisco Symphony. That later collaboration can cause confusion, but Kamen’s specific role on the Black Album track was arranging the orchestral parts, not replacing the band’s songwriting or production team.
