Which Omani peninsula contains the exclave of Musandam and overlooks the Strait of Hormuz?
Answer
Musandam Peninsula
Answer
Musandam Peninsula
The Musandam Peninsula contains Oman’s Musandam exclave and overlooks the Strait of Hormuz.
Musandam projects northward from the Arabian Peninsula into the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Most of the peninsula belongs to Oman’s Musandam Governorate, while the surrounding mainland is part of the United Arab Emirates. The peninsula’s separated Omani territory is therefore an exclave.
Its coastline is famous for steep limestone mountains, deeply indented inlets, and narrow fjord-like waterways often called khors. Khasab is the governorate’s capital and a principal settlement near the northern coast.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Because Musandam sits beside this maritime chokepoint, it has long had strategic importance. The peninsula is sometimes called the “Norway of Arabia” for its rugged coastal scenery, though this is a tourism nickname rather than an official geographic name.
