Which Olympic gymnastics discipline is performed on a trampoline bed?
Answer
Trampoline gymnastics
Answer
Trampoline gymnastics
Trampoline gymnastics is the Olympic gymnastics discipline performed on a trampoline bed.
Competitors build height through repeated jumps, then perform a controlled routine of aerial skills, including somersaults, twists and body shapes such as tuck, pike and straddle. An Olympic individual routine consists of 10 contacts with the trampoline bed and must begin and end on the feet. Judges assess difficulty, execution, time of flight and horizontal displacement from the centre.
The sport developed from recreational and training trampolining in the United States during the 1930s and later spread internationally, especially in Europe and the former Soviet Union. It became an Olympic event at the Sydney 2000 Games. World Gymnastics also governs related disciplines including synchronised trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling, but only individual trampoline is currently an Olympic event.
It is easy to confuse trampoline gymnastics with artistic gymnastics because both include flips and twists. The defining difference is the apparatus: trampoline gymnasts rebound from a spring-supported bed, while artistic gymnasts perform on apparatus such as floor, bars, beam, rings and pommel horse.
