Which venue hosted the gymnastics events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?

Ariake Gymnastics Centre hosted the gymnastics events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The temporary venue stood in Tokyo’s waterfront Ariake district, near the athletes’ village and the international broadcast and media centres.

The centre was designed for roughly 12,000 spectators and hosted all three Olympic gymnastics disciplines: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline gymnastics. Artistic gymnastics included the team, all-around and apparatus competitions, while rhythmic and trampoline events were held there as well. Although the Games were called Tokyo 2020, they took place in 2021 after a one-year postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The venue is easy to confuse with Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, which is a separate facility in Sendagaya. Makuhari Messe and Saitama Super Arena also hosted events connected with the wider Tokyo Games programme, but neither was the gymnastics venue. Ariake Gymnastics Centre was later repurposed rather than remaining a permanent Olympic arena.
