Which Olympic Games were cancelled because of the First World War?

The story behind the answer

The 1916 Berlin Olympics were cancelled because of the First World War. Berlin had been selected as host before the conflict began, and construction started on a major stadium complex, but the Games could not be held during wartime.

The 1916 Olympics would have been the sixth edition of the modern Summer Games. The war began in 1914 and continued through 1918, making international travel and athletic competition impossible. The planned stadium site later became Berlin’s Olympic Stadium for the 1936 Games.

The 1916 cancellation was the first interruption of the modern Olympic cycle. The Games scheduled for 1940 and 1944 were also cancelled, but those cancellations resulted from the Second World War. Antwerp eventually hosted the first postwar Olympics in 1920.
