Which Oceanian capital is often called simply Vila?
Answer
Port Vila
Answer
Port Vila
The Oceanian capital often called simply Vila is Port Vila.
Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, an island country in the southwestern Pacific. In everyday usage, residents and visitors commonly shorten the name to “Vila.” The shortened form appears in English, French and Bislama contexts, but it is pronounced as the city name rather than like the English word “villa.”
The city developed in the area historically known as the New Hebrides, where British and French interests competed during the nineteenth century. Port Vila was later part of the Anglo-French Condominium established in 1906, when Britain and France jointly administered the territory. Vanuatu became independent in 1980, with Port Vila remaining the national capital.
Port Vila is also Vanuatu’s main commercial and economic centre. Its harbour and Bauerfield International Airport connect the country to other Pacific islands and overseas destinations. The city is frequently confused with Luganville, Vanuatu’s second-largest town, which is on Espiritu Santo rather than Efate.
