Which Oceanian capital is Australia's largest inland city?
Answer
Canberra
Answer
Canberra
The Oceanian capital that is Australia’s largest inland city is Canberra. It is also Australia’s national capital and the largest population centre in the Australian Capital Territory.
Canberra was created as a compromise after Sydney and Melbourne competed to become the national capital. Australia’s Constitution required a federal capital in New South Wales, but outside Sydney; Melbourne served as the temporary seat of government while the new city was planned and built.
The city was formally named Canberra in 1913, and its design was developed by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. Their plan used broad avenues, geometric layouts and natural landmarks, including Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie. Canberra sits inland near the Brindabella Ranges, which helps explain why it is distinct from Australia’s coastal capitals.
Perth, Hobart and Darwin are all capital cities, but each is located on or much nearer to Australia’s coastline. Canberra’s role as a planned governmental city—not its size or age—makes it the standard answer to this question.
