Yue was born gravely ill, and her parents brought her to the Spirit Oasis when she was a baby. The Moon Spirit restored her life by giving her a portion of its own spiritual energy. Because of that connection, Yue carries part of the Moon Spirit within her even though she remains human.
When Admiral Zhao kills the Moon Spirit during the Siege of the North, Yue begins to weaken. After the Ocean Spirit attacks the Fire Nation fleet, Iroh realizes that Yue can return the spiritual life given to her. Yue accepts the sacrifice, gives back the Moon Spirit’s energy, and becomes the new Moon Spirit. Her decision restores the moon and returns waterbending to the world.
Yue’s sacrifice also concludes her relationship with Sokka, who had fallen in love with her despite her arranged engagement to Hahn. The other options are characters from different parts of the series: Ty Lee and Mai are Fire Nation citizens, while Suki is a Kyoshi Warrior from the Earth Kingdom.
