Ipswich Town won its first Matchweek 1 Premier League game since 1993–94 during the 2026–27 opening weekend.
Ipswich defeated Sunderland 2–1 at Portman Road on Saturday, 22 August 2026. The victory was especially meaningful because Ipswich had not won its opening top-flight match since the 1993–94 Premier League season.
Emersonn scored Ipswich’s opening goal after a combination involving summer signing Julio Enciso. Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo, whose direct free-kick made him the first player to score his team’s first Premier League goal of a season that way since Marcos Alonso did so for Chelsea in 2021–22.
Ipswich then secured the points in the 90th minute when substitute Clarke scored against his former club. The result gave Ipswich a winning return to the Premier League and made the promoted sides unusually successful on the opening weekend.
