Arsenal defeated newly promoted Coventry City on the first weekend of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
Coventry City’s return to the Premier League followed a 25-year absence from England’s top division. The club’s previous Premier League season had been in the 1990s, making the 2026–27 campaign a significant return for the Sky Blues.
Their first match back was particularly demanding because it was away to Arsenal, the reigning champions. Coventry City lost 3–0, but their promotion itself marked one of the season’s major storylines.
Ipswich Town and Hull City were the other two promoted clubs. Ipswich won at home against Sunderland, and Hull City won at home against Manchester United, so neither was Arsenal’s opening opponent.
