Anthony Elanga scored after five minutes for Newcastle United against Liverpool in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.
Elanga opened the scoring at St James’ Park with a rapid breakaway and finish. The goal came only five minutes into the match and was especially notable because he had played 1,315 minutes of the previous season without scoring in the league.
Liverpool equalised through Cody Gakpo in the 55th minute, but Newcastle regained the lead 110 seconds later. Substitute Joe Willock finished after Yoane Wissa’s long run, putting the home side in front again.
Liverpool salvaged a 2–2 draw deep into stoppage time. Victor Muñoz won a penalty after being fouled by Lewis Hall, and Dominik Szoboszlai converted in the ninth minute of added time.
The match also featured tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for and managed Newcastle and had also represented Liverpool. Newcastle’s new head coach was Matthias Jaissle, while Liverpool were beginning the Andoni Iraola era.
