Joe Willock restored Newcastle United’s lead against Liverpool in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.
Willock scored Newcastle’s second goal in the 57th minute at St James’ Park. His strike came shortly after he had entered the match as a substitute, putting Newcastle 2–1 ahead after Cody Gakpo had equalised for Liverpool.
The lead did not last until the final whistle. Liverpool won a late penalty after Victor Muñoz was fouled, and Dominik Szoboszlai converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time to make the score 2–2.
Willock’s goal is therefore the match’s third goal, not Newcastle’s first. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring for the hosts, while Gakpo supplied Liverpool’s initial reply. The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 20 meetings.
