Which New Zealand peninsula contains Dunedin’s Otago Harbour and Taiaroa Head?

The story behind the answer

The Otago Peninsula is the New Zealand peninsula containing Dunedin’s Otago Harbour and Taiaroa Head.

It lies on the southeastern side of New Zealand’s South Island and forms the eastern edge of Otago Harbour. The peninsula is a long, hilly volcanic landform created by eruptions associated with the ancient Dunedin Volcano. Its coastal landscape includes steep headlands, bays, grasslands, and sheltered harbour shores.

Taiaroa Head is famous for wildlife, including the northern royal albatross colony established there in 1919. It is one of the few mainland places where visitors can observe breeding albatrosses. The peninsula also supports little penguins, New Zealand fur seals, and yellow-eyed penguins.

The Otago Peninsula is part of Dunedin City, although its rural settlements and open landscapes contrast with the urban centre. It should not be confused with Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, another South Island volcanic landform with a deeply indented coast.
