Which New York skyscraper was the first building to have more than 100 floors?

The story behind the answer

The Empire State Building was the first building to have more than 100 floors.

Located in Midtown Manhattan, the building rises to 102 occupied stories above ground. Its developers increased the plan from 80 floors to 85 and later added a mooring mast, creating the distinctive upper section and final height.

Construction began in 1930 during the early years of the Great Depression. The project was completed in 1931, remarkably fast for a building of its scale, and the Empire State Building became a defining symbol of New York City.

The nearby Chrysler Building is a common mix-up because it briefly held the title of world's tallest building before the Empire State Building opened. However, the Empire State Building is the skyscraper associated with surpassing 100 floors; its 102-story count is not the same as its number of structural levels below ground.
