Ghost Ranch became a major source of subjects for Georgia O'Keeffe’s paintings.
Located near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, Ghost Ranch is known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and high-desert scenery. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s and painted its dramatic landforms repeatedly.
She was particularly drawn to the cliffs and the long, open horizons. Works associated with the area include landscapes such as Ranchos Church, Red Hills, and paintings of the Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain visible from her home. O'Keeffe described the Pedernal as her private mountain.
Ghost Ranch was then part of a large ranch owned by Arthur Newton Pack. O'Keeffe maintained a home at the site for many years, while also living at Abiquiú. The landscape remains closely identified with her artistic legacy and with New Mexico modernism.
