Georgia O'Keeffe bought her adobe home in the New Mexico village of Abiquiú in 1945.
The house had been abandoned for years before O'Keeffe acquired it. She restored the adobe building and converted it into a home and studio, making it one of the places most closely associated with her later work. The property includes the famous courtyard wall and door that appear in several paintings.
O'Keeffe had already spent years working in New Mexico, staying at Ghost Ranch and other locations. The Abiquiú house gave her a permanent base and a controlled studio environment. She lived and worked there seasonally before moving permanently to New Mexico in the later part of her life.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because Santa Fe is the region's best-known cultural center and home of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The house itself, however, is in Abiquiú, north of Santa Fe, and is preserved as a National Trust Historic Site.
