Which Nevada city is home to Tesla’s Gigafactory 1?

The story behind the answer

Sparks, Nevada, is home to Tesla’s Gigafactory 1.

The facility, officially known as Gigafactory Nevada, is in Storey County near Sparks, east of Reno. Tesla developed it with Panasonic to manufacture battery cells, battery packs, electric motors, and other components. Construction began in 2014, and the factory opened in 2016.

The site is often called Gigafactory 1 because it was the first facility in Tesla’s worldwide Gigafactory naming sequence. It is not located in the city of Reno, although the two places are close and Reno is frequently used as a regional reference. Sparks is the specific city associated with the factory’s address.

Tesla has used the site to support vehicle production elsewhere, including Fremont. Battery manufacturing at Nevada has been especially important to Tesla’s effort to increase production while reducing the cost of electric-vehicle battery systems.
