Metallica's “Enter Sandman” video won the 1992 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video.
The promotional film was directed by Wayne Isham, who also directed videos for several major rock artists. Its visual treatment matched the song's themes of childhood fears, dreams, and nightmares while helping establish the track as the album's breakthrough single.
The award came at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, after the song had already become a major radio and television presence. Music-video exposure was especially important in the early 1990s, when MTV remained a central way for international audiences to discover rock acts.
Other Black Album songs also received videos, including “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” However, the Best Rock Video honor specifically went to “Enter Sandman.”
