Which mountains are named as the resting place of Noah’s Ark in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural expression “mountains of Ararat,” describing a region rather than necessarily naming one specific summit. Ararat was an ancient geographical area associated with kingdoms in the region of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. The text does not explicitly say that the ark rested on the peak now called Mount Ararat.

Mount Ararat, a prominent volcanic mountain in modern Turkey, became the best-known focus of later ark traditions and expeditions. Its association with the story is powerful in popular culture, but it should not be confused with the exact wording of Genesis.

This distinction explains why the canonical answer is plural. “Mount Ararat” is a common shorthand, while “the mountains of Ararat” more closely reflects the biblical account and avoids claiming that one particular peak is identified.
