Which mountain region does Genesis name in the account of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 states that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The wording refers to a mountainous region rather than unambiguously naming one specific summit. Ararat is associated with a broad area in the ancient Near East, commonly connected with the kingdom or land of Urartu.

A frequent mix-up is treating this verse as if it directly said “Mount Ararat.” The famous Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey became the traditional focus of many later searches and artistic depictions, but Genesis uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat.”

Other traditions identify different mountains or regions, and proposed ark locations have never produced universally accepted archaeological proof. The biblical text’s precise claim is therefore the regional one: the ark rested among the mountains of Ararat.
