Which mountain range is named in Genesis as the resting place of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis names the mountains of Ararat as the place where Noah’s Ark came to rest.

Genesis 8:4 says the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The wording refers to a mountainous region rather than explicitly identifying one modern peak. Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom or land of Urartu, generally located around parts of present-day eastern Turkey, Armenia, and nearby areas.

A common mix-up is to answer Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic peak in modern Turkey. That mountain is strongly linked with later tradition and exploration, but the biblical wording is plural: “mountains of Ararat.” No generally accepted archaeological discovery has verified the ark’s survival, and proposed expeditions have not established a consensus find.
