Which mountain range is named in Genesis as the destination of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural expression “mountains of Ararat.” The wording identifies a region or mountain area rather than explicitly naming the modern summit called Mount Ararat. Ararat is commonly associated with the ancient kingdom or land of Urartu in the eastern Anatolian and South Caucasus region.

This distinction matters because later traditions and popular culture often identify the Ark with Mount Ararat itself, a specific volcanic peak in present-day Turkey. The biblical text does not state that the vessel landed on that individual summit. It says the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat.

The phrase should also not be replaced with Mount Sinai or another famous biblical mountain. Those locations belong to different narratives. Genesis’s exact wording is regional and plural, which makes “the mountains of Ararat” the most specific answer supported by the passage.
