Which mountain range is named as the Ark's landing place in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah's Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” rather than naming one specific peak. Ararat is generally associated with the ancient region of Urartu, located around parts of modern eastern Turkey, Armenia, and neighboring areas.

Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic massif in eastern Turkey, became the focus of later searches and popular tradition. However, Genesis itself does not say that the ark landed on the summit of the modern mountain called Mount Ararat.

This distinction matters because the biblical wording identifies a mountain region, while later traditions and expedition stories often narrow it to a particular peak. Archaeological claims about finding the ark have not achieved broad scholarly acceptance.
