Which mountain range is located in North Africa?

The Atlas Mountains are located in North Africa. They form a broad mountain system across the Maghreb, stretching through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, where they separate the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastal regions from the Sahara.

The Atlas system extends for roughly 2,500 kilometers and includes several ranges, such as the High Atlas, Middle Atlas, Anti-Atlas, Tell Atlas, and Saharan Atlas. Its highest point is Toubkal, at 4,167 meters in Morocco’s High Atlas. Snow can remain on the tallest peaks even though the range borders one of the world’s driest regions.

The mountains are closely associated with Amazigh, also called Berber, communities that have lived across North Africa for centuries. Their name comes from Atlas, the Titan of Greek mythology. A common mistake is to associate all African high mountains with the Atlas range: Mount Kilimanjaro and the Rwenzori Mountains are in East Africa and are not part of the Atlas system.
