Which mountain range is associated with Noah’s ark in the Genesis narrative?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says that Noah’s ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural expression “mountains of Ararat,” rather than naming one specific peak. Ararat was an ancient region associated with Urartu in the Armenian highlands. Later traditions and popular searches often connect the story specifically with Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic mountain in eastern Turkey.

That popular identification is not identical to the wording of Genesis. The biblical text does not state that the ark rested on the summit of the modern mountain called Mount Ararat, nor does it provide a precise archaeological location.

This distinction matters because numerous expeditions and claimed discoveries have focused on Mount Ararat and nearby areas, but no finding has been generally accepted by archaeologists as proof of the ark. The geographical phrase in Genesis remains broader than the modern mountain name used in popular culture.
