Which mountain range does Genesis name in the story of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 states that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat after the waters receded. The wording is plural and refers to a mountainous region, not necessarily to one named peak. Ararat is commonly connected with the ancient kingdom or region of Urartu in the Armenian highlands.

The famous modern peak Mount Ararat became the traditional focus of later searches and artistic depictions. However, Genesis does not identify Mount Ararat by its modern geographical name, nor does it specify an exact location within the mountains of Ararat.

That distinction matters because many claims have been made about alleged ark discoveries on or near Mount Ararat. Such claims do not change the wording of the biblical account: its stated landing place is the mountains of Ararat, while the precise site remains unspecified.
