Which mountain range does Genesis associate with Noah’s Ark after the flood?

The story behind the answer

Genesis associates Noah’s Ark with the mountains of Ararat after the flood.

Genesis 8:4 says that the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The wording is plural and refers to a region or mountain range rather than explicitly naming the modern peak called Mount Ararat. Later tradition, exploration, and popular culture often narrowed the association to that famous volcano in eastern Turkey.

This distinction explains why “Mount Ararat” is widely recognized even though the biblical wording is “the mountains of Ararat.” The ancient geographical term may have referred to a broader kingdom or highland region, and the exact location cannot be established from Genesis alone.

The account also differs from the Quran, which names Mount Judi. Treating those two locations as interchangeable erases an important textual difference. For a Genesis-based question, the canonical answer is the mountains of Ararat.
